Some of my favorite Nakaya colors are the single-color variants, with Ama-iro leading the pack. A gorgeous shade of teal, it's stuck with me since I discovered Nakaya. I purchased a Nakaya Piccolo in Ama-iro with gold hardware years back from Fountain Pen Hospital, but found that the size of the pen was too small for my hands and that I didn't enjoy it very much, but found it hard to part with. The color was truly something special, and the idea of parting with it wasn't in the cards.
Eventually I reached a decision point: sell my Piccolo for something I cared for or hoard it for the color. In the end, I made the difficult decision to part with the pen, which, while the right move, left a hole in my pen collection.
Cut to a few months ago when another friend happened to have a Nakaya Naka-ai Ama-iro with a SF Elastic nib and rhodium hardware for sale. He loved the looks, but didn't care for the softer nib. This was a no-brainer for me and a choice that filled an empty hole for me.
I'm sad that Nakaya has chosen to discontinue this finish but thrilled to be able to add it to my collection as a daily carry.
